5 Stats To Know From No. 25 Texas Lutheran's Upset of No. 1 Trinity

Sometimes rankings don’t tell the whole story — and that was certainly the case when No. 25 Texas Lutheran toppled the nation’s top-ranked Trinity Tigers, 10-8. It marked TLU’s first win over a No. 1 team since April 2016 and handed Trinity its first loss as the unanimous No. 1 club this season.

Here are five key stats that defined the Bulldogs’ statement victory:

1. Six Runs in the Middle Innings Fueled the Win

After falling behind early, TLU’s bats came alive in the middle innings. The Bulldogs strung together a six-run surge spanning the 1st through 6th innings to build a lead they would protect, turning the momentum against the nation’s best.

2. Chase Bourgeois Was All Over the Box Score

Senior Chase Bourgeois delivered in a big way:

  • 2-for-5 at the plate
  • One double
  • One triple
  • Four runs scored

His ability to reach and score consistently provided early offense and helped pile up key runs for TLU.

3. Texas Lutheran Scored in Six of Nine Innings

Offensive consistency proved decisive — TLU put up runs in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th innings, showing depth and balance throughout the lineup. That steady offense kept pressure on Trinity and ultimately pushed the Bulldogs past the Tigers.

4. Bullpen Success Sealed the Upset

Freshman Cody Andrade closed out the game, pitching two innings while allowing just one run and striking out three of four batters in the 9th. His performance under late pressure was key to preserving the lead.

5. First Top-Ranked Win in a Decade

This wasn’t just another ranked victory — it was historic for the program. TLU’s 10-8 win marked its first victory over a No. 1-ranked team since April 2016, ending a long drought against the nation’s best.

What This Means

Beating the top team in the country puts Texas Lutheran on the map as a serious contender in DIII baseball this spring. With three Top 25 wins already this season — including the big one over Trinity — the Bulldogs have momentum and confidence as conference play approaches.

Fans can catch the Bulldogs live on FloCollege as they return to action for a three-game series against Austin College starting March 6.
