TEMPE — Arizona State’s men’s basketball team delivered one of the biggest upsets of the season Tuesday night, taking down No. 14 Kansas 70-60 in a game that swung early and never shifted back.

Guard Moe Odum scored a team-high 23 points, and center Shawn Phillips Jr. added 19 as the Sun Devils built a commanding 40-20 lead by halftime. ASU held the Jayhawks to 60 points, limiting Kansas to 29.2% shooting and forcing key turnovers that led to transition baskets.

The victory carried both local and national relevance, snapping a season marked by inconsistency for ASU while handing a top-15 opponent a rare road loss. Kansas (21-9, 11-6 Big 12) entered with NCAA tournament aspirations and a reputation as one of the conference’s premier programs.

Instead, the Jayhawks left Tempe searching for answers.

ASU has battled inconsistency all season, with much of the conversation centered on whether head coach Bobby Hurley would remain in the Valley after spending the past 11 seasons with the program. While this win does not guarantee anything regarding the program’s future leadership, it does give both the team and its fans a home finale to remember.

It wasn’t just the fans inside the arena who celebrated. Supporters online were equally ecstatic, praising the resilience and fight of the Sun Devils’ young core.

With one game remaining to close out the regular season, Arizona State can hold its head high after going toe-to-toe with — and ultimately taking down — one of the highest-ranked teams in college basketball.
