Currie Cup result: Griquas too good for Sharks in Kimberley

Winger Dylan Maart and replacement hooker Tiaan Lange both crossed for hat-tricks as Griquas secured a 55-21 win.
It moved them five points clear of the Boland Cavaliers, who beat the Lions earlier in the day, and the Cheetahs, who face the Bulls XV at Loftus on Sunday.
The Sharks remain seventh on the log with just two matches to play.
The hosts took charge with early set-piece pressure forcing a series of penalties before hooker Janus Venter powered over from a maul. Flyhalf George Whitehead added the extras.
Scrumhalf Bobby Alexander thought he had scored the second but it was ruled out for offside before Sharks flyhalf Tim Swiel cynically stopped another scoring opportunity, resulting in a penalty try and 10 minutes in the sin bin.
The Sharks hit back through flanker Tino Mavesere before Maart sensationally dotted down in the corner to restore the 12-point buffer.
The visitors then went on a second-quarter blitz, with tries from Swiel and lock Johan Momsen giving them a 21-19 lead.
Griquas responded immediately, though, with winger Gurswin Wehr making a powerful run before an offload released Alexander to dot down.
The hosts went back to basics in the second half, with Whitehead threading a superb grubber into space for Maart to collect and dive over for his second try and the bonus point.
The Sharks rallied but another powerful Griquas maul resulted in Lange crossing the whitewash and replacement flyhalf Liam Koen converted to make it 38-21.
Mavesere was shown a yellow card for cynical play in the red zone and the hosts made the one-man advantage count. Lange powered over for his second before completing his hat-trick from yet another powerful maul.
Maart then dived over in the corner to claim his own hat-trick.
In round six, Griquas travel to Nelspruit to face the Pumas, while the Sharks host the Lions in Durban.

Dithejane Brace Fires Chicago Fire Into Leagues Cup Quarter-Finals
South African forward Puso Dithejane bagged both goals as Chicago Fire secured a 2-1 victory over Cruz Azul to advance to the Leagues Cup quarter finals.
Dithejane was named in Chicago Fire’s starting lineup to face the Liga MX champions at the SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview.
The South African bagged a brace to cancel out Nicolas Ibanez’s equaliser to earn his side the victory, which saw them advance to the next round of the competition.

Heyneke: All Blacks lack Boks’ depth
Former Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer believes the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series has come too soon in Dave Rennie’s All Blacks tenure.
Rennie has won his first five matches in charge, including tour victories against the Stormers and Sharks, but Meyer says facing the world champions over four Tests will expose the difference in depth between the two nations.
“I think it’s very difficult for Dave Rennie to start [his All Blacks tenure] and to face the Springboks,” Meyer told the Behind the Ruck podcast.
“I think what the Springboks are doing right now is picking our best side, and this side is very experienced and four Test matches is going to be very tough, but we’ve got depth.
“And I think that’s what the All Blacks don’t have. I’ve got so much respect for the way they play, but they don’t have the depth because they only keep big guys [well-known players] in New Zealand and they’ve lost a lot of good guys [to overseas clubs].”

Meyer, who coached the Boks from 2012 to 2015, believes South Africa’s traditional strengths give them the edge.
“On the day, the All Blacks can beat any team, but I think the way the game is going now you have to scrum well, you have to maul well. It’s a set-piece game. They like a continuous game.
“The game has changed because you can bring in a whole new pack. So, we’re the only team in the world that’s got that depth in the forwards, maybe France [as well].
“And if you don’t have a good set-piece, you’re in trouble. And we’ve got an unbelievable set-piece. So, it will be close, but at home, you have to back the Springboks.”
KRONFELD: Springboks on another level
Meyer believes the Boks’ 17-10 win against Argentina in Buenos Aires last Saturday also demonstrated their ability to prevail when below their best.
“They know they didn’t play well, but they still know how to win. They were under pressure, everything went against them and two moments, two great tries.
“So, we’ve got brilliant players, but I think our set-piece is by far the best in the world.”

Fleckie warns Boks of Rennie’s brutality
Former Stormers boss Robbie Fleck rates Dave Rennie as the best coach he’s faced, and the key to beating his All Blacks side is matching that edge the “hard-nosed” Kiwi instils.
Fleck, who coached the Stormers from 2016 to 2019, faced Rennie’s Chiefs three times in Super Rugby at Newlands – a 60-21 quarter-final loss in 2016, winning 34-26 a year later, then losing 17-11 in a quarter-final.
Rennie led the Chiefs to back-to-back Super Rugby titles in 2012 and 2013 before stints with the Glasgow Warriors, Wallabies, Kobe Steelers and now the All Blacks.

Speaking on the Boks Unpacked X The Verdict podcast with fellow ex-Boks Jean de Villiers and Hanyani Shimange, ahead of Saturday’s clash between the All Blacks and Vodacom Bulls at Loftus, Fleck described Rennie’s coaching style.
“He’s probably the best I know. I went and did some professional development with him when he was head coach at Glasgow, and he’s my favourite coach of all time,” Fleck said.
“The key to what a Dave Rennie side looks like is that they play with huge intensity, with lots of ball in hand and quick outside backs.
KRONFELD: Springboks on another level
“The key ingredient for Dave Rennie is physicality. He builds his whole game around it, and he calls it ‘brutality’. You sit and listen to this guy speak and everything is about being brutal – collisions, the breakdown, the tackle.
“Everything is a fight. As soon as you give an inch to the opposition, you’re losing the game.”
Fleck said Rennie’s intense focus will be more pronounced in the upcoming four-Test series between the Boks and New Zealand, which kicks off at Ellis Park next Saturday.

“Of course, set-piece matters to him – you have to defend your ball and win possession – but his key ingredient is physicality. If he believes, even for one second, that his team is losing that side of the game, he’ll try to correct it, because he knows he’s going to lose.
“Look at the touring side Rennie has brought over, he’s brought big humans to counter the Springboks,” the former centre noted.
“He’ll be driving that message throughout this campaign about how physical they have to be to beat South Africa.
“That is Dave Rennie: an old-school, hard-nosed coach who understands the nuances of the game. Every single side he’s coached, you can see that Dave Rennie flavour coming through, and that’s a sign of a very good coach.”
