Mainz's Fischer: Still Fighting Against Relegation

Mainz 05 head coach Urs Fischer credits stability for the club's miraculous turnaround from last to 9th in the Bundesliga, but insists they're still fighting against relegation.

In an interview with Kicker, Fischer discussed how he transformed a team that was dead last in the Bundesliga with just six points when he took over in December. Since then, Mainz has collected 25 points in 2026, moved halfway up the table, and beaten top opponents including Bayern, Leverkusen, Leipzig, Frankfurt, and Hoffenheim. Despite their improved position and 33 points with six matchdays remaining, Fischer maintains his team is still in the relegation battle. 'I don't see my time here as a success just yet,' the 60-year-old coach stated, emphasizing that Mainz remains focused on survival while also competing in the Conference League.
